The 19th annual Arizona Adult Literacy Week (AALW) is scheduled to begin Sunday, March 19th, 2023 and will continue through Saturday, March 25th, 2023. The purpose of Arizona Adult Literacy Week is to increase awareness of the importance of adult literacy including its impact on quality of life and economic recovery through creating an educated citizenry. It is important because approximately 14% of Arizonan’s do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent and are not enrolled in school. Furthermore, approximately 10% of Arizonan’s over the age of 18 cannot communicate effectively in English. Arizona Adult Literacy Week celebrates the hard work and accomplishments of adult education programs, instructors, volunteers, community organizations and of course adult learners.
AALW is the perfect time for literacy advocates and organizations to engage policymakers, donors, the media, and their communities in making literacy a priority. Make the most of this opportunity and use the time now to start planning how your organization will recognize AALW. Make the most of this opportunity to raise awareness of the need for adult education.
We have seen how AALW makes a difference in communities throughout Arizona and how it directly impacts the lives of those who are involved. We encourage you to celebrate adult literacy in your program sites and classrooms and look forward to seeing how your adult learners share their incredible talents and educational dreams.
